Our projects that examine new material alternatives also aim to build collaborative relationships between architects, designers, environmental scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and more. The design, fabrication, and construction of the pavilion, temporarily housed on the UVA Lawn, explored the relationships between computation, advanced fabrication, and surface tectonics. Led by Professor Brad Cantell this research provides a proof of concept for an emerging toolset that relies on real-time sensing of landscape phenomena coupled with a process of adaptive management to produce closer relationships between site analysis and methods of construction. Our DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY projects also include design-build studios, and studios focused on the art and craft of material detailing, structural expression, and tectonic complexity. The annual summer program, scheduled for June 26-July 1, 2016, provides high school students experience in a university setting using a faculty-led curriculum derived from Virginia Tech’s Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and Industrial Design programs. Students live in university housing, a short walk from classrooms, dining facilities, libraries and sports facilities. High school students entering grades 10-12 can participate in this hands-on summer program to discover what it might be like to study architecture and design, and, in the process, learn more about university life. Since classes are offered in an intensive format, in-depth learning and collaboration with faculty and fellow students are the norm.
